The 3D animation and learning to read - the Shrek effect and other reasons to be optimistic.

Why Phonics? While here in FruitPhonics, we do not support a particular product or subscribe to any particular "school of thought, we believe that the modern phonics-based literacy, sometimes called phonetic synthesis has been shown by far the most efficient way to early literacy for the majority of children.

In the case of slow learners and the socially disadvantaged, these methods have proved virtually eliminate the teaching intervention. This is particularly salient for Children International, learning English as a foreign language, who do not have the benefit of an English-based cultural experience.

Why 3D animation?

What role can have 3D animation in the education of young children? Why do we consider it so potentially powerful? Why do parents see as an attractive option?

Over the last decade, 3D animation has emerged as a powerful means of entertainment for children and adults because it works on several levels. 3D animation has the remarkable power of emotional engagement. This effect Shrek or Monsters Inc or Toy Story or a very popular franchise in 3D, which have emerged in recent years, and not only among children. They suspend disbelief and immerse themselves in the rich 3D worlds, the emotional depth of the characters and their story. The range of emotional expression made possible by the 3D technology is outstanding and when combined with the visual spectacle and anarchy animation so familiar form of 2D technology, it is not surprising that the result is so dramatically engaging.

Our goal is to educate. This requires motivation and emotional commitment to promote retention (memory) and assimilation - information committed to memory and converted into knowledge as a platform to a higher level thinking skills. To achieve these objectives, the quality animation is a powerful, interactive 3D animation is even better. Animation alone is insufficient, the content requires energy and music. It must work on a level of entertainment. We are creating characters who are basically guardians and friends with whom learners can participate and "escape". Fortunately 3D animation is well proven in this area, especially when combined with effective sound design, particularly the music and sometimes visual mayhem.

Using 3D animation to engage and educate young minds has a great attraction for young children, which could increase levels of motivation and thus the progression. The key is to develop narratives that work within the needs of education. They can be used as mere tales of learning capacity entertainment or integrated into effective learning activities.

Phonics learning schemes can benefit from two modes of use. A bonus of the integration approach is that it is possible to combine 3D animation with fun interactive activities that enhance learning phonetics in a way that is familiar to parents of generation games. This interactive mode of control is called kinesthetic ways of learning, and visual and auditory learning, the three main learning styles.

high quality 3D character animation integrated into phonetic activities would motivate and engage children while being naturally adapted to their preferred learning style. It's a combination that could be very effective indeed, a fact that even to an ogre like Shrek or Mikey and Sulley, and all the other inhabitants of the 3D world, very proud.
